Project Description

Latinx youth face many challenges: parents have high expectations in schools for them, yet the parents are usually not equipped to help with homework or to help them untangle emotional challenges that may happen at school. High drop-out rates, bicultural stress, and peer victimization undermine the Latinx community’s potential nationwide, and we work to avoid that trend in Richmond, IN and Wayne County. In addition, the stress caused by COVID-19 has created an emotional hardship on both students and parents. Our Amigos Latinx Leadership Program targets middle school students through weekly workshops about college and career exploration while developing an understanding about their social and emotional growth.  This program helps students to identify a career path, understand 21st Century Scholar Program, set positive goals, understand the importance of volunteering, make responsible decisions and manage emotions. Each year, since 2007 we have engaged with approximately 36 Latinx youth at Test Intermediate School.
